About Story Arts

Story Arts Inc. is a not-for-profit cultural arts organization founded by storyteller/author Heather Forest in Huntington, New York, U.S.A. in 1975. It is recognized as a 501(c) 3 corporation by the Internal Revenue Service. Current concert and workshop programming focuses on the ancient art of storytelling and the diverse ways that storytelling can enrich multi-cultural understanding, interpersonal communication, and literacy.

Educational programs are presented in both schools and community settings in the Long Island, NY area as well as at conferences and storytelling festivals throughout the United States.

Artist in the Schools: Story Arts-In-Education Program

Concerts and workshops on the art of storytelling are presented by artistic director Heather Forest and guest artists in approximately 80 Long Island, NY schools each year. In-class workshops for students as well as in-service training for teachers are provided to augment the existing reading, writing and communication arts curriculum. An out-reach program using the art of storytelling to increase literacy and communication skills serves academically at-risk students in underserved communities.

In the Long Island, New York Community:

Storytelling Workshops & Concerts

Public workshops on the art of storytelling taught by Heather Forest and nationally recognized guest artists are made available to develop artistry in local tellers, to encourage intergenerational communication and to foster multicultural awareness. With sponsorship from community organizations, free public storytelling concerts are presented in Long Island museums, libraries, community cultural centers, and community parks.

Storytelling Resources

Storytelling audio recordings, storytelling books, and teacher study guide materials are made available to reach a broader audience than can attend public concerts or in-school performances.

Story Arts On Line:

This new project, initially funded by the Bell Atlantic Foundation, is being developed to launch an educational outreach to schools via the Internet on the subject of storytelling in the classroom.
